It’s been a busy start of the year! Today, we are happy to announce that Nordic Capital, subject to approval by the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority, will become our new co-owners in Trustly (www.trustly.com).
We are excited about the opportunity to work together with Fredrik Näslund and his team, whose track record includes investments in companies such as Point and Bambora. With their support Trustly can continue the journey to becoming the global real time bank to bank payments provider.
We invested in Trustly in 2011 after a connection made through one of the company’s first employees, Carl-Henrik Somp. At the time, Trustly had a dozen or so employees and had enabled approximately one million payment transactions in the company’s life. We were thoroughly impressed with the company’s founders, Joel Jakobsson, Lukas Gratte and Carl Wilsson. In them we saw talent and immense potential. They had built a system that was second to none in the area of financial connectivity and removed the need for pretty much all other middlemen in the payments space. To date, Trustly has processed more than SEK 100 billion on its platform! Trustly’s founders will remain as co-owners of the company.
Since 2011 the European payments landscape has undergone significant change. Trustly has been instrumental in driving this development for the better. With the new EU payments regulation, PSD2, the market opportunity for Trustly is greater than ever.
In 2014, Bridgepoint Development Capital joined the ownership group. They contributed significantly to Trustly’s development. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with them. As they now will sell their shares, we thank Johan, Magnus and Martin for their great contribution. You will be missed!
Oscar Berglund has been a fantastic contributor to Trustly for almost 10 years. Since 2016, Oscar has been the company’s CEO and he will continue fulfilling this important task under the new ownership.
Thanks to Tuula Tallavaara for helping us out on the legal part of the transaction! You did a brilliant job, as always.
